Hi!  My name is Melissa Stokley.  I have been teaching Chemistry at Wayne County High School for the past seven years.  I graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science in Biology.   I currently teach chemistry, but I also have endorsements in physics and biology.  If you need to reach me, please contact the school at 601-735-2851.  My planning period is first block, so I am available for conferences from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00.

On Monday, students will begin a new unit on the periodic table.  In this unit, students will learn the following skills or information:

  • Students learn how and why the periodic table was created and how it has affected the way they learn chemistry.
  • Students will learn to recognize patterns in the periodic table and will be able to use those patterns to make predictions.  Some of these patterns include:
    • trends in valence electrons and electron configurations
    • reactivity
    • ionization patterns
    • electronegativity trends
    • patterns in density and metallic properties
  • Students will learn the location of specific areas in the periodic table, such as:  alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, lanthanides, actinides, halogens, chalcogens, noble gases, metalloids.  Students will also learn about the chemical and physical properties of these different groups.

Students will have a vocabulary test on chapter 5 terms on Wednesday of this week.

Students will perform a lab on Friday. They should remember to dress properly.

Students will also be assigned an element project this week.  This project will be due on November 20.  Some students will present their projects on Nov 20, while some will present them on Nov 21.
