Monday

Exponents and Properties of Exponents

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)

Students will successfully use and identify the laws of exponents.

Introduction of Lesson

You know, we mathematicians are kind of lazy, at least when it comes to writing. If we can find a shorter way of writing something, we’re all over it. Take for instance the following expression:  x× x× x× y × x× y × y × y × y × x× y × x× x× x    What a pain to write out! Man I wish there was a shorter way to write the same thing! Hey, wait a minute! Isn’t this exactly what exponents were made for?

Eagle Challenge

(3-5 minutes)

Multiplication table practice with integers

Learning Tasks/Activities

Complete a graphic organizer to define and give examples of the properties of exponents then evaluate exponents.

Closure

Students will compare answers with a partner, discuss problems that have different answers, and correct them.

Tuesday

Multiplication of Like Bases

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)

Student will use the properties of exponents to find the product when multiplying with exponents.

Introduction of Lesson

When we have the product (multiplication) of powers on the same base we can simplify by adding the exponents!

Eagle Challenge

(3-5 minutes)

4 problems simplifying exponents

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will use their individual white boards to work practice problems 1-7 from a handout. Student will complete problems 8-14 independently.

Closure

Teacher will check problems for accuracy and have students correct any mistakes.

Wednesday

Division with Exponents

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)

Using the graphic organizer the student will combine like bases with division.

Lesson Introduction

There is another basic situation when working with exponents that is very common … what if we divide numbers with exponents? We simply subtract the exponents of the variables you are dividing.

Eagle Challenge

(3-5 minutes)

Division with signed numbers practice

Learning Tasks/Activities

Review multiplication with like bases

Discuss and compare division/multiplication with like bases having students state the difference of combing with division and combining with multiplication.

Students will partner-up and  practice dividing with like bases by playing “trashket ball”

Closure

Student will solve 5 division with exponents problems from a worksheet.

Teacher will check problems for accuracy and have students correct any errors.

Thursday

Powers of Exponents (product, quotient )

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)

Student will solve problems dealing with powers of exponents

Introduction of Lesson

Review defining exponents

Review rules for powers of exponents

Review multiplying and dividing exponents

Eagle Challenge

(3-5 minutes)

Practice multiplying and dividing Integers

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will discuss rules for exponents using the graphic organizer.

Use the graphic organizer to answer questions on a quiz

Practice working with powers of exponents using individual white boards

Closure

Teacher observation, and quiz

Friday

Test on Powers of Exponents
