Evaluate Expressions

Focus of Lesson

Student will evaluate expressions using the given values.

Introduction of Lesson

 

Explain how to evaluate an expression using a give value.

Demonstrate how to replace the variables with the given values and evaluate or simplify the expressions.

 

Eagle Challenge

(3-5 minutes)

 

Timed multiplication practice

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will evaluate 5 expressions using values given on individual white boards

Students will compare answers then the teacher will work the problem on the board for student to check for accuracy. Student will complete the remaining 15 problems individually.

Closure

Student will evaluate 20 expressions using given values.

Tuesday

Combine Like Terms

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)

Student will combine like terms in algebraic sentences.

Review definition of like terms from algebra vocabulary.

Introduction of Lesson

One of the most basic rules you learned in science class was that oil and water doesn’t mix.  (demo oil and water). Using that same idea we see that x’s and y’s don’t mix (demonstrate x and y mixture). Using this idea we are going to combine like terms keeping in mind that oil and water don’t mix or unlike terms don’t mix. In order to combine-the terms must be alike or the same.

Learning Tasks/Activities

Crumple and Shoot game for combining like terms.

1. Use problems from handout.  (see instructions for game after lesson plan).

Student will independently complete any problems not finished in the crumple and shoot game.

 

Wednesday

 

Solve One-Step Equations

Focus of Lesson

 (Student-Friendly Objective)


Student will solve one-step equations

Lesson Introduction

 

Class will view Online Video

Let's say you've got a see-saw (teeter-totter)... and you've got 50 pounds of stuff piled on each side:  Here's the big Algebra game: What ever you do, you’ve go to keep the see-saw balanced.

What if we add  3 pounds to the left side

CLUNK!  It's not balanced anymore!

But, if we add  3 pounds  to BOTH sides? It stays balanced!

Equations are just like see-saw

You have to keep them balanced!

So, whatever you do to one side of the " = " you've got to do to the other side.

 

Eagle Challenge

Timed multiplication practice

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will discuss balance and how it applies to solving equations.

Take turns solving one step equations on the white board. Students will check each others work for correct answers.

Solve 10 equations on independently.

Check student work for accuracy

 

Thursday

 

Solve Two-Step Equations

Student will solve 2 step equations

Introduction of Lesson

Same as Wednesday except use equations with 2 steps.

Class will use knowledge from Wednesdays lesson to solve 15, 2- step equations.

Closure

Students will compare answers to check for accuracy and correct any missed problems. Teacher will check for misconceptions and re-teach accordingly.

 

Friday

 

Solve One and Two-Step Equations

Student will solve one and two step equations

Introduction of Lesson

Review solving equations
