Explain how to evaluate an expression using a give value.
Demonstrate how to replace the variables with the given values and evaluate or simplify the expressions.

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will evaluate 5 expressions using values given on individual white boards
Students will compare answers then the teacher will work the problem on the board for student to check for accuracy. Student will complete the remaining 15 problems individually.

Closure

Student will evaluate 20 expressions using given values.

Tuesday

Combine Like Terms

Focus of Lesson

Student will combine like terms in algebraic sentences.
Review definition of like terms from algebra vocabulary.

Introduction of Lesson

One of the most basic rules you learned in science class was that oil and water doesn’t mix. (demo oil and water). Using that same idea we see that x’s and y’s don’t mix (demonstrate x and y mixture). Using this idea we are going to combine like terms keeping in mind that oil and water don’t mix or unlike terms don’t mix. In order to combinethe terms must be alike or the same.

Crumple and Shoot game for combining like terms.

Wednesday

Solve OneStep Equations

Student will solve onestep equations

Let's say you've got a seesaw (teetertotter)... and you've got 50 pounds of stuff piled on each side: Here's the big Algebra game: What ever you do, you’ve go to keep the seesaw balanced.
What if we add 3 pounds to the left side
CLUNK! It's not balanced anymore!
But, if we add 3 pounds to BOTH sides? It stays balanced!
Equations are just like seesaw
You have to keep them balanced!
So, whatever you do to one side of the " = " you've got to do to the other side.

Class will discuss balance and how it applies to solving equations.
Take turns solving one step equations on the white board. Students will check each others work for correct answers.
Solve 10 equations on independently.

Solve TwoStep Equations

Student will solve 2 step equations

Same as Wednesday except use equations with 2 steps.
