To multiply a power of ten, count the number of zeros and move the decimal

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will discuss the rules for multiplying or dividing by a power of 10 (metric conversion) and give oral answers for multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. Student will relate the lesson to workplace math by filling out forms such as a stock supervisor would in a large department store. (pg. 146147)

Introduction of Lesson

When ordering supplies you often more than one of each item. For example, a supply order might include three boxes of pens or ten boxes of paper clips. The price of one item is called the unit cost. Unit means one item. Total cost is found by multiplying the unit cost by the number of units you want.

Decimal Basics  Math at Work (service careers)

Introduction of Lesson

One important service industry is banking. Do you have an excellent eye for detail? Do you enjoy working with numbers or money? If so, you may be interested in becoming a bank teller. Bank tellers must be able to count money quickly using calculators and mental math. They must be able to record the money brought into the bank (deposits) and the money taken out of the bank (withdrawals). All transactions performed by the teller must balance at the end of the day. Bank tellers must also have good communication skills and a pleasant appearance.
