Introduction of Lesson

Multiplying and Dividing Decimals is almost the same as multiplying and dividing whole numbers. There is only one difference. You have to place the decimal point in the answer.

Learning Tasks/Activities

Class will discuss rules and steps for multiplying and dividing decimals then solve practice problems on individual white boards. (140 and 143) Workplace math  The student will use filling out forms and ordering supplies to practice multiplying and dividing decimals (146149)

Students will compare answers to check for correctness. Any different answers should be checked for errors.

Decimal Basics  Math at Work  Service Careers Banking

Introduction of Lesson

One important service career is banking. Do you have an excellent eye for detail? Do you enjoy working with numbers and money? If so, you may be interested in becoming a bank teller. Bank tellers must be able to record the money brought in (deposits) and money taken out of the bank (withdrawals). All transactions performed by the teller must balance at the end of the day.

Class will explore and discuss banking – focusing on the checking account. Students will complete deposit slips, check registers, and write checks on the account. The class will discuss savings accounts focusing on interest bearing accounts.

Decimal Basics  Ratios, Proportions, and Per Cents

Introduction of Lesson

Ratios, proportions, and per cents are used every day. We will be looking at ratios and rates first. Ratios compare quantities or amounts. When you compare inches to inches or dollars to dollars you are comparing like quantities. You can also compare unlike quantities or amounts. A ratio comparing unlike quantities is called a rate. A rate usually has a denominator of one. It is very important to use the units of both numerator and denominator in a rate.
