Objective: Greek and Latin Root Words: 5.4.b Know abstract, derived roots and affixes from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words.

Unfamiliar and Multiple Meaning Words: 5.4.a Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

Read and discuss Island of Blue Dolphins Daily!!!

Bellwork: Practice Test Questions

Classwork: TTW and TLW continue discussing Greek and Latin root words.

            TLW complete an word wise activity using these root words. (bottom of

       page) Read and  discuss IOBD.

Homework: Greek and Latin roots worksheet/Define these words using the Frayer Model.

 

Tuesday:

Bellwork:Practice Test Questions

Classwork: Introduce unfamiliar and multiple meaning words using powerpoint and video.

Active Engagement (15-20 mins): Students complete the multiple-meaning words worksheet.  Teacher should conference with individual students or pull a small group.

Wednesday:

Bellwork:Practice Test Questions
Classwork: TTW and TLW do a Multiple Meanings game ( details for game are in Drive) where the students must find another student with the correct word or definition that matches his/hers. TLW complete a handout for their level of knowledge. (L, M, H)

Homework: Workbook page  184

Thursday:

Bellwork:Practice Test Questions

Classwork: Review Greek and Latin root words, review multiple meaning words.Workbook pg. 344 and 353

TLW create venn diagrams with a choice of two words for multiple meaning words.  The venn diagram will display a sentence, the meaning, and a picture of the word.  Persuasive writing assignment: Think of one thing about your school that needs changing. (15 minutes)( bottom of page)

  2. TSW practice problems guided by teacher and putting in notebooks (pg 278)

  3. TSW practice independently on pg 278 (7-25 odd) and 39-46

Objective:  Students will find area of rectangle in fractional units 5.NF4

  1. TTW pose the thinking Problem (TE286B) explain how to find the area, how to show the area with unit squares

  2. TTW show how to find the perimeter in association with area

  3. TSW work sample problems in their notebooks pg 286/SMART BD

  4. TSW work pg 286-287 independent practice

  1. TTW pose an introduction problems / use Teaching Tool 30 (TE 288B) explain how to multiply mixed numbers  by changing to improper fractions first

  2. TSW practice problems as teacher guides them (pg 288)

  3. TSW work Independently from pg 288-289 (odds)

Objective: Students will compare the size of the product to the size of one factor without multiplying as they begin to consider multiplication as scaling 5.NF.5.b

Lesson:  

  1. TTW  Introduce the lesson by posing a problem and they will answer it any way they can (TE290B), explain how and why to multiply sizes

  2. TSW work some examples from the SMART board with help (pg 290-1)

  3. TSW work practice problems on their marker boards (8-11), then work independently from pg 290-291

  2. TSW work problems with guidance by the teacher (pg 294)

  3. TSW work problems for practice in their notebook from pg 294-5

Objective: Students will divide fractions by whole numbers

Lesson:  

  1. TTW Introduce the lesson 10 – students will read and solve the probing question/problem on the SMART board any way they can (TE 296B), teacher will show the students the inverse relationship between multiplication and division

  2. TTW explain steps for dividing fractions by whole numbers

  3. TSW  work in pairs add mixed numbers using ralley coach ws

Independent practice – Students will work WORKBOOK 11-10 independently
Homework:  finish WB 11-10

Topic 11 lesson 8 and 11 – Problem Solving – Multiple step problems and drawing pictures/writing equations
Objective: Students will solve multiple step word problems 5.NF.6

        Students will use diagrams and write equations to solve problems 5.NF.7.a
Bell work: Review questions on SMART board
Lesson:  

  1. TTW Introduce the lesson 8/11 – students will read and solve the probing question/problem on the SMART board any way they can (TE 292/298B), teacher will show the students how to solve problems with more than one step, use diagrams, and write equations

  2. TSW  work in pairs to complete problems, then explain their problems and how they worked it to the class. (use workbook 11-8/11)
