Third Graders Visit Vet's Office and WAR Field Trip

On Friday, September 29th, Buckatunna School’s third grade students traveled to Waynesboro to visit the Waynesboro Animal Clinic and W.A.R. (Waynesboro Animal Rescue). 

War Eagle Marching Band Classic WCHS Band

The Wayne County High School marching band will host 15 bands at the War Eagle Marching Band Classic Competition Saturday, October 21, at War Eagle Stadium. The classic prepares the marching bands for state competition. The bands will be judged and evaluated, with WCHS not being part of the evaluations. Wayne County will perform at 7:45 p.m. in a special performance.

Pre-K Welcomes Special Visitors Ms. Toni Dresses Up

On Thursday, October 05, 2017, Mr. Clarence Gray with the Wayne County Fire Department came and volunteered on his day off to talk to our Pre-K students about fire safety. Charles McCall, who works with the State Line Fire Department, also provided two fire trucks for the students to see, touch, and hear.

Dance Team Attends Camp BJH Dance Team

Buckatunna Jr. High's dance team recently attended camp with American All-Star, LLC. During camp, members learned the routines they will perform throughout the year. Several members were recognized for their efforts during camp.

War Eagle Football Tickets War Eagle Football

Wayne County War Eagle football season tickets will go on sale Thursday, August 3. Tickets can be purchased at the high school from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Season tickets are $60 for the six games with a parking pass available for additional cost of $25. Timber Bowl tickets to both the Wayne Academy and Wayne County games are included in the season ticket package.

The War Eagles will have some of the best football teams in Mississippi coming to War Eagle Stadium as West Jones (Aug. 18), Jefferson Davis County (Sept. 1), Picayune (Sept. 22), Hattiesburg (Oct. 13, and West Harrison (Oct. 27) visit War Eagle Stadium. All games will begin at 7 p.m. except for the Timber Bowl on August 18. Wayne County will play West Jones at 8 p.m. after the Wayne Academy-South Choctaw contest that begins at 6 p.m.

Child Nutrition Managers Learn from the Best Child Nutrition Managers

The Wayne County School District Child Nutrition Managers from each of the area schools attended a Culinary Skills Training recently in Ridgeland. The training was hosted by the Mississippi Department of Child Nutrition and nationally renowned Chef Cyndie Story, K-12 Culinary Solution Team. The local managers of the WCSD were provided training in food production, recipe development, and food safety. The focus of the training was to improve schools' meal programs. Representing the WCSD were Sherrie Parnell (Beat 4), Meshell Lofton (WES), Maxine Blackwell (Buckatunna), Terri Shoemaker (Clara), Shawanna Sibley (WCHS), Chris Stevens (WMS).

This year Buckatunna Elementary celebrated their Disney themed Back to School Bash on August 2, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with several Disney characters.

Community Prayer Walk

Wayne County Schools opened their doors Wednesday night (August 3) for pray time. The community was able to come to each school in the community to walk through and pray for the safety and success of the students and faculty for the school year.

New Bus Schedules for WCSD in 2016

In an effort to become more efficient with bus routing the Wayne County School District will re-route several buses within the Waynesboro city limits this school year.

Administrators are asking for pa­tience from the public, students and parents during this transition period as adjustments are made to fine-tune the schedules and the process of transport­ing students.

Back to School Bash

Buckatunna's annual Back to School Bash will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Parents and students are encouraged to attend. You and your child will be able to view the classroom list, schedule, and will be able to meet our faculty/staff and principals. Be sure to bring and drop off your child's school supplies. After meeting with teachers, please go by the storm shelter and hang out with the Disney characters. Our concession stand will be open if you'd like to purchase drinks and snacks.

2016 - 2017 Registration for ALL Students

Buckatunna School will hold registration for ALL students in July.  Kindergarten students registering for the first time must attend with a parent. Parents of all students must bring two proofs of residency dated after July 1, 2016, as well as the names, addresses, and phone numbers for emergency contacts and checkouts. This registration is mandatory for all students who will attend Buckatunna School during the 2016-2017 school year, regardless of whether the student attended the previous year or not. Dates are as listed below (9 am - 3 pm):

July 18: Kindergarten - 2nd grade

July 19: 3rd - 5th grade

July 20: 6th - 8th grade


Wayne County School District Student Dress Code 2016 - 2017

This dress code outlines the only acceptable form of attire approved to be worn by students in this district.  Any deviations, however slight, are disallowed.

Kindergarten Hosts Mother's Day Luncheon

The Kindergarten classes at Buckatunna Elementary celebrated Mother's Day with a luncheon on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Both the students and the mothers enjoyed this special time together. 


Third Graders Meet Ella the Husky

Third grade students at Buckatunna recently read passages about Alaska and Alaskan Huskies, which are often used as sled dogs. Jut Jenkins, Mrs. Dawn Jenkin's son, brought his Alaskan Husky, Ella, to meet the third graders and to help them learn more about this unique dog breed. 

Seventh and Eighth Graders Attend Technology Fair

Buckatunna's 7th and 8th Grade students participated in a Technology Fair at The Wayne County Career and Technical Center.  The students pictured won in their specific division. 

Eighth Graders Visit Careers Expo

Buckatunna's 8th grade students attended the Passport to Careers Expo in Jackson, MS at the beginning of March.  Appropriately 1,400 students from across the state of Ms attended this event.  

GAT Students Visit the MS Coast

On Friday February 19, 2016 Buckatunna STRETCH 5th-8th Grade visited Ocean Springs and Biloxi, Mississippi for their field trip.  

"Coffee with Cops"


The students at Buckatunna School held a special "Coffee with Cops" on Friday, February 26. It was the first time they had hosted this event, but they plan on holding the event every year to honor the brave men and women who serve as law enforcement officers. Representing the WCSD were Superintendent Bobby Jones and Buckatunna Principal Lynn Revette. Also pictured are Wayne County Sheriff Jody Ashley and Waynesboro Assistant Police Chief Kennedy Meaders. Officers from State Line, Biloxi and the Mississippi Highway patrol were in attendance, along with several Waynesboro City Police and Wayne County Sheriff officers.
60% Schedule for Feb. 23

The Wayne County School District will run a 60 percent day schedule due to the predicted inclement weather. The buses will depart from Wayne County High School at 12:20 PM. Outlying schools will need to adjust their schedule accordingly.

Clark Oil Company of Waynesboro and Exxon Mobil $7000 donation

Clark Oil Company of Waynesboro made a $7,000 donation to the Wayne County Schools recently.  The monies will go to each of the Math and Science programs at the local schools as part of the Exxon Mobil’s Education Alliance Program.  

Buckatunna Hosts District Spelling Bee

Buckatunna School recently hosted the District Spelling Bee with a Mardi Gras theme. Several students from Buckatunna participated. The top three students were students from Waynesboro Middle School. Congratulations to all students who participated on a job well done!

Fourth Graders Study Phases of Moon

Students in Mrs. Beard's fourth grade science class recently completed their studies on the phases of the moon. Students created models of the phases using chocolate sandwich cookies.

Buckatunna Students Participate in District Reading Fair

Several Buckatunna students participated in the recent Wayne County District Reading Fair. Our school was very well represented, as many of those participating brought home first, second, and third place ribbons. Congratulations to all of those involved. 

Fifth Graders Visit Vo-Tech

Fifth grade students recently toured the Wayne County Vo-Tech and were able to see how math really matters in our everyday life. 

Fifth Graders Complete Area Study with Art Project

Students in Mrs. Gina Mills' fifth grade math class recently completed a study on area by creating art using rectangles.

Fourth Graders Study the Human Body

Students in Mrs. Beard's 4th grade science class have been learning about the different systems of the human body. The students participated in several activities to gain a more hands-on unerstanding of how the body works. 


On October 30, students in grades K-4 enjoyed dressing up and collecting treats during Buckatunna's annual Trunk-or-Treat. 

Students of the Month Recognized for August and September

Students of the Month for August and September were recently recognized and rewarded with medals and a pizza party. Students Learn about Hunter Safety

The seventh grade class of Buckatunna School enjoyed participating in the Mississippi Hunters' Ed program. This course is offered every year to this age group of students at Buckatunna School in the requirement of state laws in preparing for Youth Hunting Day and their future hunting license.

On Tuesday September 29, 2015, the Buckatunna Buccaneers welcomed back all former athletes, cheerleaders, band members, and other former Buccaneers who wanted to join in the celebration.  The Buccaneer Alumni were honored with a reception and half time recognition. 

Junior Beta "Paints the School Yellow" for Childhood Cancer Awareness

During the month of September, Buckatunna Junior Beta Club hosted an on-site fundraiser to raise awareness about childhood cancer. The money raised was given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mississippi. $878.00 was raised for this charity. LBPA Parent Meeting

Wayne County School District is hosting a district wide mandatory information meeting for all third grade students’ parents and/or guardians.  This meeting will explain the requirements of promotion to the next grade level contained in the Literacy Based Promotion Act (LBPA) and what is expected of all third graders to meet these requirements.  Parents will also receive information on the Third Grade Reading Gate Summative Assessment at this meeting.

Buckatunna to Hold Blood Drive

Buckatunna will hold its annual blood drive on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The blood drive will be held from 2:00 pm - 6:15 pm in the storm shelter. Please help us save lives by taking a little time from your day to donate. You can be a hero, too!

4H Representative Visits STRETCH

Every year the Wayne County 4-H representative, Mrs. Crocker, visits the STRETCH program at Buckatunna School.  She works with the kids to promote the 4-H program by teaching them a new craft or skill. Click to read more.

PTO Meeting and Parent Portal Training

Buckatunna School will hold its first PTO meeting in the cafeteria on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 at 6:00 pm. All parents are encouraged to attend this meeting and become an active member. 

Immediately following the meeting, training for the Parent Portal System will take place. Parent Portal is an internet based program through which parents can have up-to-date access on their childrens' grades and attendance records.

Nine Weeks Testing Schedule

The 2nd 9 weeks testing schedule is as follows:

Wed., Dec. 18: 2nd, 4th, and 6th block; Thurs., Dec. 19: 3rd and 5th block; Fri., Dec. 20: 1st block

NO test will be given early. Friday will be a 60% school day. Car bell will be at 12:20 PM and buses will leave at 12:30 PM. Friday will be a regular school day. Students not present will be marked absent.

Coca-Cola Fundraiser a Success
The recent Coca-Cola fundraiser held at Buckatunna School was a big success. Over 400 cases were sold with all profits benefiting the school. Thanks to all of the parents, students, faculty, and staff who helped make the fundraiser a success. Special thanks also goes out to the football players who helped unload and sort all of the drinks. Reading Fair to be Held November 12
Our Buckatunna School Reading Fair is fast approaching. This year our reading fair will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Projects will be due to the reading fair committee on Friday, November 8, 2013. Click for more information or to access Reading Fair forms and guidelines.
PTO Meeting

Buckatunna's first PTO meeting of the year will be held Tues., Sept. 3, 2013 in the BES cafeteria. One lucky student will win a new bike! In order to qualify, parents/guardians must be present at the meeting and must be a paid member of the PTO. PTO dues are only $3 for an individual or $5 for a couple and can be paid at the meeting. We hope that everyone will attend and help make this school year an excellent one!

Back to School Bash

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, Buckatunna School will hold a Back-to-School Bash from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Students and parents will have an opportunity to meet their teachers, get schedules and lunch numbers, and see some of the changes that have taken place on campus in regards to locations of the various offices. Free refreshments will also be served. The activities will begin in the school cafeteria at 6:00. We hope to see you there!

The Buckatunna Science Fair will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in the storm shelter. Students in grades 3-8 may enter a project in the areas of Biology, Physics, Earth & Space, or Chemistry. Students may begin to deliver boards on Mon., Jan. 7. Judging will begin on Thursday at 9:00 a.m.

On Tuesday, February 28th, second grade students from Buckatunna attended a Mardi Gras Carnival at the Pine View Health & Rehab Center in Waynesboro. 

Third Grade Hosts Christmas Breakfast

On Monday December 7, 2015  the 3rd grade students at Buckatunna had a Pajama breakfast with their parents.  The students and parents enjoyed breakfast along with hot cocoa, coffee, and other treats.  


Buckatunna's Homecoming will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015. The Homecoming Court will be introduced at 5:30 pm and the game will begin at 6:00. Please come out and support our Buccs!

Athletic Reunion to be Held

A Buckatunna High School and Middle School Alumni Reunion will be held on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, during our halftime activities. A reception will be held in the storm shelter at 4:30 and the game begins at 5:00. This is for ALL past and present athletes, cheerleaders, dance team members, band members, and coaches. Back to School

Buckatunna School Parents: The office will re-open on Monday, July 27. Any parent that needs to register a first time student may come by between the hours of 8-3. We will be mailing letters about our Back to School Bash the first of the week. Letters will be mailed to the address that we have on file. If this has changed, please notify the office on Monday.

Fourth Grade Enjoys Tasty Activity

Students in Mrs. Beard's 4th grade science class have been learning about objects in outer space and how they move. After learning about the phases of the moon, students created models of the phases using sandwhich cookies.

Wayne County Reading Fair

Buckatunna Holds its Annual Christmas Program

Buckatunna held its annual Christmas program on Thursday, December 11. Students from every grade level entertained parents and other guests with a variety of Chirstmas classics, as well as a few new tunes.

Buckatunna 5th Grader Wins National Competition

Information Technolgy Services (ITS) is excited to announce that a poster submission from Makayla Goff, a 5th grade student of Buckatunna School, was chosen as one of the thirteen national competition winners.  These thirteen entries will appear in a 2014 calendar distributed nationally this fall by the MS-ISAC as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, recognized each October. The entries may also be used in national, regional, and state computer security awareness campaigns.

Fourth Graders Celebrate Valentine's Day with Parent Luncheon

On Valentine's Day, students in Mrs. Krystal Kittrell's and Mrs. Kelly Beard's 4th grade classes hosted a special luncheon. Students invited parents to share a meal to celebrate the holiday. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time making memories together.

BJH Track Team Races to Success Track

BJH earned the Boys' 2nd place trophy at the District Track Meet and the Boys' 1st place trophy at the Singing River Track Meet. ​

Eighth Graders Graph Functions

Mrs. Griggs' 8th grade Pre-Algebra students completed a threading project where they had to graph a  function after studying linear and non-linear functions.

First Graders Release Butterflies

Buckatunna's first graders have been studying the life cycle of a butterfly. The students were able to witness butterflies in the various stages of their life cycle. They have watched as five butterflies grew from caterpillars. On May 12, the students took their butterflies outside and released them. 

ICT Students Participate in "Hour of Code"

Cheer and Dance Fare Well at the Fair

Buckatunna's Tiny-Mite Cheerleaders, Pee Wee Cheerleaders, and Blue Angels Dance Team recently competed in a competition held at the Wayne County Fair. Each team represented the school well and brought home trophies to prove it! Click to read more.

Jr. Beta Club Hosts "Pastries for Parents"

Upon the suggestion of Assistant Principal Crystal Bates, Buckatunna Beta hosted their first Pastries for Parents.  Beta students participated and earned service hours for their chapter.  Several parents arrived on campus around 7:30 in the morning to be served pastries by several Beta members.  The students and parents had an enjoyable time.

Buccs Show Out at Cheer/Dance Competition
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Tiny Mite Cheerleaders, Pee Wee Cheerleaders, and Blue Angels Dance Team compteted at the Wayne County Fair Cheer and Dance Competition. The teams represented Buckatunna School well, bringing home several triphies for their efforts. Click to read more.

Clark Oil Donations to WCSD Clark Oil Donations to WCSD

Clark Oil made donations of $500 each to the math and science programs at each Wayne County schools as part of ExxonMobil’s Educational Alliance Program. The program awards grants each year to schools in order to help enhance math and science education across the United States. This is the 17th consecutive year for the program.

STRETCH Students Explore Laurel STRETCH

On Friday, February 24, 2017, the 5th-8th grade STRETCH students visited the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art and the Laurel Mercantile. Students also enjoyed a nice lunch at Mi Casita. 

Seventh Graders Demonstrate Knowledge in Unique Fashion

Buckatunna 7th Graders have been studying equations and inequalities.  To reinforce these skills, Mrs. Griggs assigned a project where students were to create a December calendar.  

BJH Dancers Perform at MSU Game

Two Buckatunna Jr. High Dance Team members performed with UDA during halftime at the Mississippi State University football game on September 19. These students represented our school very well, and we are very proud of them!

Fourth Graders Go Green

Students in Mrs. Beard's 4th grade science class have been learning all about plants. Students completed their studies by dissecting beans to examine the parts of the seed and then planting their own beans. They will continue to observe as their beans sprout and turn into plants.

Jr. Beta Club Participates in Read Across America

March 3-7 is National Beta Week.  As a service project, Beta students from Buckatunna participated in Read Across America to celebrate Dr. Seuss.  Jr. High Beta members volunteered to read to students in grades K-2.  Both the younger students and Beta members found this to be exciting.

Teachers Receive Training on Cooperative Learning

Buckatunna School recently hosted a two-day Kagan Cooperative Learning workshop, inviting other teachers from the district to attend, as well. The workshop was funded through the TIF Grant which Buckatunna recieved in 2010. Teachers attending the workshop learned about teaching students through cooperative learning. The workshop motivated teachers to try new strategies in the classroom to engage students and help students better retain the information being taught. First Graders Study Butterflies

Mrs. Jaime Crager's and Mrs. Pam Guy's classes took part in a six week study of the butterfly life cycle, and the various habitats and types of butterflies.  After each class raised five tiny caterpillars into beautiful butterflies, the students helped release the painted lady butterflies at school. After the release, one first grader reported that he missed the butterflies alrready!

First Graders Learn About Spanish Culture First Grade

Students in Mrs. Patrick's first grade class recently finished reading "Mama's Birthday Present". Students learned about how birthdays are celebrated in the Spanish culture.

Proof of Residency

Dear Parents or Guardians,

 Our School District recently had a state audit through the Office of the State Auditor. One of the resulting requirements of this audit is that beginning the 2015-2016 school year all parents or guardians in the Wayne County School District must provide two current proofs of residency at the time of student registration each year regardless of whether or not parents or guardians have lived in the same residence for previous years. Creepy, Crawly Science

Students in Mrs. Beard's 4th grade science class have been studying insects and metamorphosis. One of the insects the class studied was the mealworm, which is the larva form of the darkling beetle. The lesson turned hands-on as students conducted experiments to test the preferences of live mealworms. Many students put aside their fears as they got to know these tiny creatures better. 

First Grade Hosts Thanksgiving Luncheon

The first grade classes recently hosted a Thanksgiving luncheon in the school cafeteria. Parents and family were invited to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal including turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and more. The students and parents had a wonderful time and made plenty of lasting memories.

Firewise Program

Representatives from the Wayne County Extension Office visited with 4th and 5th grade students at Buckatunna. They presented the Firewise Program and taught students about preventing wildfires. 

Area Schools’ Teacher of the Year Recognized by the WCSD School Board

In a recent meeting of the Wayne County School Board, teachers who were selected as Teacher of the Year from district schools were recognized for their accomplishment.  These teachers were chosen by the faculty and staff of each school to represent them in the selection of the Wayne County School District Teacher of the Year. Each nominee completed an extensive application in which his/her educational history, professional biography, community involvement, and the philosophy of education were detailed.

Fourth Graders Study Plant Reproduction

Mrs. Beard's fourth grade science students have been learning about how plants grow and reproduce. Students planted lima beans to observe the germination process. 

Math Team Wins Second Place in District Math Bowl

Congratulations to the Buckatunna Math Team! These students competed in the Wayne County Math Bowl on Tuesday, April 14. The team placed second in the district. We are very proud of their hard work and of their wonderful representation of our school. 

Beta Club Hosts Spooky Event

Third Graders Enjoy Field Trip

Buckatunna’s third graders ventured to the Waynesboro Library on November 5, 2015. Students participated in a simulated theater experience by viewing “Muppets Most Wanted.”  Students ended their field trip with lunch at the park. 

Pre-Algebra Students Participate in Scavenger Hunt

Beta Students Attend Convention

First Grade Hosts Thanksgiving Luncheon
Buckatunna School's first grade students enjoyed a fabulous turnout of parents for the annual Thanksgiving luncheon.  Smiles were abundant and the food was delicious!
Students Explore Labor Day

Mrs. Gandy's students explored the history of Labor Day and made connections from the historical viewpoints of others about the holiday to a selection in the PH Literature book.

WCSD School Board Recognizes Parent of the Year

Doll Swindle was recognized at a recent school board meeting for being selected as the Wayne County School District Parent of the Year.  She was nominated by the faculty and staff of Waynesboro Middle School.  Mrs. Swindle was then selected as the WCSD Parent of the Year from a group of parents nominated by district schools.  She was chosen on the basis of her support and contributions to her children’s schools.  Mrs. Swindle is married to Christopher Swindle.  They have 3 daughters, Christian (Waynesboro Middle School), Gracie (Waynesboro Elementary School), and Trinity (Bridgeway Preschool).

4-H Representative Visits STRETCH Classes

4-H representative Lanette Crocker recently made her annual visit to the Buckatunna STRETCH program.  

WCSD Administrator of the Year Honored by the WCSD School Board

Robert (Bubba) Hathorn was recently honored by the WCSD School Board for being selected as the WCSD Administrator of the Year.  Mr. Hathorn is assistant principal at Wayne County High School.  He was selected from a group of nominees based on his educational philosophy, his ability to inspire teachers, and his contributions to the Wayne County community.  According to one of his colleagues, Mr. Hathorn exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional administrator by treating students and teachers with compassion, dignity, and respect.  He also shows a great commitment to making Wayne County High School successful in educating our youth.  

Mr. Hathorn has 27 years of total educational experience with 12 of those being in administration.  He is married to Cassie Hathorn, and they have one daughter, Taylor.

A Peek into the Rainforest

Wayne County School Board Recognizes the Teacher of the Year

Stephanie Hodo was recently honored at a Wayne County School Board meeting for being selected as Wayne County’s Teacher of the Year.  Mrs. Hodo was chosen on the basis of her ability to inspire students, her leadership capabilities, and her contributions to the school and community.  

Mrs. Hodo has taught English II at Wayne County High School for 10 years. She is married to Alan Hodo, and they have two sons, David and Will.   

Buckatunna Participates in Community Night

Buckatunna participated in the third annual Community Night at WCHS on Aug. 31.  The theme for the 2015-2016 is "Riding the Waves of Success".  

Students Rewarded
