War Eagle Football Team Honored By Mississippi Legislature

Members of the Wayne County War Eagles football team were honored this week by the Mississippi Legislature. The War Eagles claimed the Class 5-A MHSAA State Football Championship back in December with a heart pumping 45-41 win over Oxford at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium. The House of Representatives read a proclamation praising the team and their accomplishments. They were hosted by Shane Barnett of Waynesboro and Dennis DeBar, Jr of Leakesville.

Waynesboro Middle School Career Day

Waynesboro Middle School recently hosted their annual Career Day. The purpose of the day is to educate students about various career choices. Several guests from the community presented information to the students on careers that may interest them as they continue through junior high, high school, and college. Each presenter focused on his or her specific career. They each informed students of preparations and educational requirements that may be necessary in order to pursue a certain career. The presenters shared with the students their regular daily schedule that are part of their profession. The Lonny Wilson Memorial Scholarship
A new Wayne County High School scholarship will honor the late Lonny Wilson. The Lonny Wilson Memorial Scholarship has been created in honor of a man who was an avid supporter of Wayne County kids and their athletic endeavors.
 
 Wilson is a Collins native and graduated from Collins High School in 1968. He played football at Jones County Junior College, where he was a member of the 1968 National Championship team. Wilson also played football at Delta State, where he graduated in 1972.

Al Smith Elected to State Wide Office

Long time school educator Alvin Smith was recently elected to the Mississippi School Board School Association as a member of their twelve-person board. Smith has been the representative since 2013 on the Wayne County School District School Board representing Beat Four.

Culinary Arts Competition

The Wayne County Culinary Arts students competed in the Family, Career, Community Leaders of America Competition on March 2nd-4th. The students competed in several events and attended leadership classes while at the competition. The students brought home the following awards:

Montana Loper -1st place in cake decorating

Tyson Spencer -3rd place in restaurant service

Jadazia Land -short order

Barbara Harris, Kobresha Clarke, Breanna Taylor -2nd place in the Culinary Arts STAR event.

Skills USA State Competition

The Skills USA classes from the Wayne County Career and Technical Education Center competed at the state level March 1-2.  The classes that represented the career center were Construction, Information Technology, Law & Public Safety, and Welding.  The following students competed and/or observed.  The first place winners will now advance to national competition in Louisville, Kentucky.
